In this workshop, we will teach older adults how to protect themselves from online scams. Scammers often target older adults, so it’s important to know what to look for and how to stay safe. We will explain the most common scams—like fake tech support calls, phishing emails, romance scams, and messages pretending to be from the IRS or local authorities.
We will discuss the warning signs in emails, texts, and phone calls, such as bad grammar, urgent requests, or strange links. Attendees will learn how to check if a message or website is real and what to do if something doesn’t feel right.
We will also teach safe browsing habits, including how to spot fake websites and avoid risky links. To help attendees take action, we will explain where and how to report scams in Japan—like calling the police or contacting the Consumer Affairs Center.
By the end of the session, attendees will feel more prepared to recognize and stop scams before they cause harm. This event runs 90 minutes, with plenty of breaks and time at the end for Q&A. It is geared towards adults over the age of 55 and will be hosted at the Round Rock Public Library in Round Rock, Texas.
